Todos Santos Island (Baja, Mexico)

Just west of the town of Ensenada, Mexico and located eight miles out to sea stands the two towering islands known as Isla de Todos Santos. Formed by volcanic activity eons ago, they are now a paddler’s paradise. Once famous for its abalone farms, Todos Santos now stands deserted, frequented only by paddlers, Mexican fishermen, and surfers who travel from worldwide to ride the monstrous 60-foot wave break off the Northern Island every winter. Todos Santos is situated perfectly in the path of migrating Grey whales making their annual journey from the Bering Sea to calving grounds of the Magdalena Bay. We’ll spend a day touring the fishing village of Ensenada, Mexico, then after a night’s sleep at the beachside campsite we’ll hug the shoreline of Punta Banda and weave around seastacks and rockgardens until we make our four-mile open water crossing. We’ll spend two days camping on the island complete with hiking and enjoying gourmet meals around campfires, stargazing and some of the best tide-pooling in all Mexico. For all you shutterbugs the opportunity for world class nature photography is only a click away. We’ll do a circumnavigation of the Southern island and frolick with a multitude of Sea lions and harbor seals (The only permanent inhabitants at Todos Santos). After paddling back to the mainland on the last day we’ll fiesta at the Hawk’s favorite Taqueria with margaritas all around. This trip is open to everyone. Humboats has a few double kayaks for paddlers who are new to kayaking, but taking Hawk’s Comprehensive Weekend course is strongly advised.

Cost of trip is $675 ($550 with own boat) and includes kayaks and necessary equipment, all camp meals, and ground transportation from San Diego, Certified professional guides/naturalist. Not included: round-trip airfare, in-town meals, personal camping gear and supplies, camping fees at la Jolla campground. Itineraries are guidelines only subject to change due to weather and ocean conditions.

I recently finished a trip along the desolate \"Lost Coast\" with my friends from liquid fusion kayak. Our goal was to go slow and pick it apart, learning everything we could about the area in the period of seven days. We hiked, biked, and kayaked, seeing the land and water from multiple vantage points. The trip was in part a diversion from our long busy kayak season but mostly a recon mission to scope the area out for future adventures with you the wilderness loving public. We spent our days cataloging plants and animals, sea life, and weather patterns. We immersed ourselves into the environment became one with it. We paddled many miles and landed through big dumping surf waves. We camped on beachheads, in forest thickets, and next to mountain streams. In reality the area of exploration was only a fraction of the entirety of the Lost coast. With future trips already in the works we\'re on our way to becoming the foremost experts and ambassadors to this amazing stretch of coastline. Read our blogs, look at our pictures and video and contact us if the kayaking the Lost Coast is a dream of yours as well.

Comments: Jeff Laxier, Cate Hawethorn, and Hawk spent a week Hiking and kayaking the remotest sections of California\'s Fabled lost coast this fall. The beauty of this coast is unrivaled anywhere in the lower 48 and provides a sea-kayaker with the ultimate challenge in testing their skills. Look for trips departing in late summer of 2012
