Surf Zone Survival

Surf zone training is the best training for being out in the open ocean with big swells and breaking storm waves. It is also great cross-training for white water river kayaking. Along the Redwood Coast, the surf zone can be an intimidating impediment to paddling the open coast. In this class, we will learn the skills needed to negotiate this challenging environment, such as launching off a beach and timing the wave sets, landing on the beach through waves by riding in safely behind them. Finally, we will learn the exciting skills for surfing into the beach ‘cowa bunga’ style. With proper training and practice, kayakers can learn skills such as bracing and edging in order to be able to successfully negotiate waves forwards, backwards, and sideways. Prerequisites: Basics or Comprehensive Weekend. The Eskimo Roll course, while not required, will be helpful for those learning to kayak in the surf zone. Equipment: All equipment will be provided (includes kayak and paddle, helmet, wet suit, paddle jacket, and safety gear).
