Introduction to Canoeing

The Canoe was North Americas first means of mass-transit and never has there been a better watercraft capable of navigating vast stretches of rivers and transporting large amounts of supplies. Modern canoes of today are made out of woven fibercloth and polyethylene but they have changed much from the days of our ancestors in shape or design. In this class we explore the canoe from design and construction, History and use as well as plenty of time out on the water learning canoe strokes and boat handling. This class will prepare you for flatwater canoeing and familiarize you with paddling tidal estuaries. This class is a prerequisite for Canoe II and is open to everyone with a sense of adventure.

Comments: This group of Kids had a great trip with us down the Mellow but exquisite South Fork Eel river. We drifted down river banks lined with old growth redwood trees and across streams carrying Chinook and Coho Salmon to distant spawning grounds. We stopped for lunch on a large river bar and swam in a large emerald pool at the take-out. Bring your class or group out for an adventure with Humboats expert guides and naturalist.
