As kayaking grows into the mainstream, more and more of the average kayakers are venturing out on long trips and exploring wilderness waterways. Who out there hasn’t sat silently in their craft, gazing longingly out across the open water, dreaming of paddling in far-off destinations? The kayak is the ultimate expedition craft, capable of stowing a month’s worth of gear and food before re-supply. One can take off from home port and not stop until reaching Alaska or Cabo San Lucas. Join Hawk as he shares with you the secrets of good expedition planning, from acquiring maps and charts to acquiring sponsorships and getting the right equipment. We’ll cover how to load your kayak and paddle it fully-laden, handling group dynamics and the psychological factors of being out there alone with the elements. With a heavy emphasis on safety, Hawk will share tips and lessons learned from his expeditions in Baja, British Columbia, Lake Superior, and the Outer Banks as well as a dozen or more from his stint as an Army Ranger. Class duration is 6 hours.
